An extraordinary, museum-grade piece of Cold War history: a matching pair of authentic vintage international border post plaques from the historic Finland-Soviet Union frontier. These opposing emblems were mounted directly onto the wooden boundary pillars facing one another across the heavily guarded border line. The Finnish Border Plaque. Features the iconic Finnish Lion Coat of Arms (Suomi) trampling a sabre. Shield-shaped casting with 4 original corner mounting holes. The reverse shows genuine sand-mold texture and stamped foundry markings (including a stylized “B” and a “? ” mark). Faint aging with a beautiful natural patina. The Soviet Union (USSR) Border Plaque. Features the heavy, cast metal State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union. Beautifully detailed with the hammer and sickle over the globe, rising sun, and wrapped wheat sheaves containing official text ribbons. Features robust original mounting points and an untouched, deep vintage patina. Soviet Plaque Details & Provenance. The reverse side of the Soviet plaque features official factory-stamped metric dimensions reading “19.2 x 22.2 x 2.9″ along the bottom edge, alongside a stylized workshop/inspector stamp on the lower left. This is a vintage print that belongs to an original set of 32 reproduction prints entitled Soviet Painting. This print includes a descriptive protective tissue guard with the painting’s title, the artist’s name, the painting technique, the date, and a short essay about the work and the artist, providing historical and stylistic context (see last picture). Published just months before Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland (September 1939) and two years before Hitler’s devastating attack on the Soviet Union (June 1941), this poster represents the confident, triumphant face the Soviet state projected to the world-and its own citizens-before the catastrophe of World War II. The artwork, depicting industrial life at the Sormovo dockyard in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), dates to circa 1920. Depicts women working alongside men in heavy industry, a domain traditionally dominated by men. This visually supports the early Soviet government’s official policy of gender equality, which aimed to revolutionize traditional ideals of womanhood. The women are portrayed as strong, capable, and integral members of the workforce, not as objects of beauty or in traditionally subservient domestic roles. They wear practical work clothing (aprons, headscarves) that deemphasizes conventional femininity in favour of functionality and productivity, aligning with the “new Soviet woman” ideal. Style: Socialist Realism is an officially sanctioned artistic style developed in the Soviet Union in the 1930s and later adopted across the Eastern Bloc. It was not just an art movement, but a state policy that governed how art should look and what it should communicate. Made in The USSR.
