Rare 1920s Soviet Literacy Propaganda Poster – “The Illiterate is Like a Blind Man” – A. “?????????????????????? -????????????????????????????? ” Translation: The illiterate is like a blind man-everywhere he faces misfortune and disaster. Radakov (Aleksei Radakov), well-known Russian illustrator and political cartoonist. This poster was created during the Soviet Union’s Likbez campaign (“liquidation of illiteracy”), a massive literacy drive launched after the October Revolution. The illustration style mimics traditional lubok folk prints, making the message accessible to rural populations. Such posters were displayed in schools, reading rooms, and village cooperatives to urge citizens to pursue education. Size: 68 cm × 48.5 cm (26.75 in × 19.1 in). Medium: Color lithograph on coarse period paper. Colors: Red, blue, black, and white, with a striking folk-art border design. Very good for its age – Minor edge wear and small chips along the margin (see photos). Slight curling consistent with 20th-century posters. Markings: Original print credits at the bottom; signed in print by the artist A. Authentic example of Soviet agitprop art. Adorable matching PAIR of. Early, 1920s vintage, stockinette cloth, ethnic dolls. Each with their very large, sewn-on cloth labels. 8040 and “Made in Russia” VANKA No. This charming pair of cloth over wire armature dolls have applied hair and molded and finely painted features (he has side-glancing eyes and she has closed eyes) and mitt type hands and wear their original colorful and layered clothing. She wears a charming, long floral printed peasant skirt with gathered waist and thin shoulder straps, a padded, peasant-style blouse with long full sleeves, golden apron and undergarments, her brown floss hair is center parted and drawn back under two colorful, (blue over bright pink) babushka scarfs and. Woven “lapti” straw shoes. Tied at the waist and with a matching bright pink, cotton shirt, brown flannel coat and a black flannel cap with visor covering his brown hair and matching woven straw shoes. They both wear laced and padded stockings and are in wonderfully clean and bright condition with no stains or fading. (we have not cleaned them) (loc flat) They have no damages, no tears or holes and no odors as they are from a smoke free home. Other vintage Russian dolls shown with them are.
