This set contains 13 coins spanning the history of Russia from 1547 to the present day. The coins are crude and often struck off center. The obverse shows St. George slaying the dragon. 4/Elizabeth, denga, KM-188, 1741-61. Weighing over 8 grams, the copper denga was equivalent to half a kopek, or 1/200 of a ruble. The crowned double-headed eagle is the coat of arms of the House of Romanov. 5/ Catherine II, 5 kopeks, C-59.3, 1762-96 Weighing in at a massive 51 grams on average, these enormous 5-kopek copper coins are almost twice as heavy as U. Silver dollars of the same period. The elaborate monogram on the obverse, E T, stands for Ekaterina Tsarina; the reverse shows the Romanov two- headed eagle. 6/ Alexander I, 2 kopeks, C-118, 1801-25. This early-19th-century copper issue is about the same size as a denga from 50 years prior, demonstrating the inflation of the time period, exacerbated by the Napoleonic Wars. This copper 2 kopek coin is among the last issues of the House of Romanov. 8/ Lenin (RSFSR), 15 kopeks, Y-81, 1921-23 Among the first issues of the new Bolshevik government, and the first to feature the hammer and sickle insignia, these silver coins were issued during the Lenin years. 9/ Stalin (USSR), 15 kopeks, Y-96, 1931-34 These copper-nickel issues circulated in the Soviet Union during the Great Famine that saw over 5 million deaths-a direct result of Stalin’s collectivization policy. Stalin’s portrait never appeared on a Soviet coin. 10/ Khrushchev (USSR), 20 kopeks, KM-132, 1961-64 Design features oversized denomination and date. On reverse, the Soviet insignia. This design was used until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. 11/ Gorbachev (USSR), 5 roubles, KM-294, 1991 Among the last issues of the Soviet Union, these copper-nickel issues feature the Kremlin dome. 12/Yeltsin (Russian Federation), 20 roubles, KM-314, 1992 On its new coinage, the Russian Federation features a two-headed eagle, long associated with the House of Romanov. 13/ Putin (Russian Federation), 10 kopeks, KM-602a, 2006-15 The new Putin-era design features a portrait of St. George slaying the dragon-the very same image that Ivan the Terrible used on his coins.
