This is a vintage print that belongs to an original set of 32 reproduction prints entitled Soviet Painting. This print includes a descriptive protective tissue guard with the painting’s title, the artist’s name, the painting technique, the date, and a short essay about the work and the artist, providing historical and stylistic context (see last picture). Published just months before Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland (September 1939) and two years before Hitler’s devastating attack on the Soviet Union (June 1941), this poster represents the confident, triumphant face the Soviet state projected to the world-and its own citizens-before the catastrophe of World War II. We can see the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin greeting a female worker in the Kremlin, surrounded by other officials and workers. The work was created to venerate Stalin and symbolize themes like female equality and the success of Soviet industry, aligning with the propaganda of the era. Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was a Soviet revolutionary and politician who led the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. He held office as General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1922 to 1952 and as premier from 1941 until his death.
