The puncher is designed for punching information holes in punched tape, punched tape is a fairly reliable information carrier in itself. Previously, when floppy drives did not yet exist, and drives on magnetic drums and tapes were accordingly very expensive, punched tapes were used to save programs – these are paper tapes onto which a program was punched in the form of holes, each row of holes had its own symbol. From the middle of the 20th century, punched tape began to be used as an information carrier for the first electromechanical computers.
