RARE original Russian Polar Antarctic Submariner mechanical men’s wristwatch Raketa 24 Hours. RARE dial Zestril (likely produced for a pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca which produces such a drug). Made by PChZ (Petrodvorzowy Watch Factory). Shockproof ballance, 19 jewels. Made by Petrodvorzowy Watch Factory (PChZ) in 1980s. The Petrodvorets Watch Factory, located in Saint-Petersburg, was initially founded by Peter the Great in 1721 as a precious stone manufacture. It supplied precious stones for the crown of the Tzars, for Faberge, Imperial palast, the Kremlin Stars and Lenin’s moseleum. From 1930’s the factory started manufacturing rubis for watch mechanisms, then watches under famous soviet brands. In 1962 the factory created its own new brand “Raketa” (it means Rocket) in honor of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. From 1969 factory is working on a new collection that includes a modern redesign of the Polar expedition watches. The given watches have been created under the special order of military seamen. For militarians served on submarines. In conditions when it is impossible to define on the sun what time of day at present. We find these objects now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, but also in most of the palaces of Europe, like Versailles, the Louvre or Sanssouci. In Soviet times, the plant has continued to work on precious stones. This plant has produced among others, the Mausoleum of Lenin in 1924 and the Kremlin stars in 1935. In the prewar years, the skilled workers began manufacturing precision and measurement instruments for the Red Army and the new industry of Russian watches. Destroyed by Nazi troops during the Siege of Leningrad, the plant was rebuilt from 1944 at the liberation of the city. In 1945 Joseph Stalin – who wanted to reduce USSR’s dependence on imports from the West – gave the order to the factory to manufacture watches. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. It is desirable to adjust the hands of your watch at the same time every day. An automatic or self-winding watch should be worn for at least 8 hours a day. It is a mechanical watch in which the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of natural motion of the wearer’s arm, to provide energy to run the watch, making manual winding unnecessary. 1940’s EXTRA RARE Kirovskie K-43 pocket watch mechanical chronograph Right time (Vernoe Vremia). Made in USSR (Soviet, Russian,). It would be great find for any collector. Really watches look much better than in the photo! Industrial Cooperative Artel “Right Time”, Moscow. It based on the movement Kirovskie K-43 military wristwatch. Modified to Chronograph by Industrial Cooperative Artel “Right Time”. The pocket watch chronograph was produced in the late 1930’s-early 1940’s. This model was produced in 1st quarter of 1941- please see engraving 1-41 on the movement (this is the date when the mechanism was produced). Type-1 Modified with addition of Chronograph stage. The movement in this pocket watch Chronograph, produced from about 1938 to 1941, is based on the Type-1 pocket watch caliber and is one of the very first indigenously designed Soviet watch movements that was actually produced in quantity. Engineers added an additional stage to a standard Type-1 pocket watch movement. With a start/stop/reset button at’11’ this is one of two pocket watch Chronograph calibers produced roughly at the same time. The Chronograph function on the other variation is activated and reset by depressing the winding stem. Note that the Chronograph sub-dial counts elapsed minutes in an anticlockwise direction. This was probably done to minimize the number of gears that needed to be added; additional gears would have increased the thickness of the watch. Altmeppen reports that the production records he examined at the 1st Moscow Watch factory do not contain any mention of this caliber. It is my belief that the records are blank because the modification of the movement did not occur at this factory. 1940’s EXTRA RARE Kirovskie K-43 pocket watch mechanical chronograph Right time (Vernoe Vremia). Made in USSR (Soviet, Russian,). It would be great find for any collector. Very good condition for it’s age. It has small traces of use. Please see the photos for the assessment of watches. Runs well and keeps time. Chronograph functions work correctly. Really watches look much better than in the photo! Industrial Cooperative Artel “Right Time”, Moscow. It based on the movement Kirovskie K-43 military wristwatch. Modified to Chronograph by Industrial Cooperative Artel “Right Time”. The pocket watch chronograph was produced in the late 1930’s-early 1940’s. This model was produced in 1st quarter of 1941- please see engraving 1-41 on the movement (this is the date when the mechanism was produced). Type-1 Modified with addition of Chronograph stage. The movement in this pocket watch Chronograph, produced from about 1938 to 1941, is based on the Type-1 pocket watch caliber and is one of the very first indigenously designed Soviet watch movements that was actually produced in quantity. Engineers added an additional stage to a standard Type-1 pocket watch movement. With a start/stop/reset button at’11’ this is one of two pocket watch Chronograph calibers produced roughly at the same time. The Chronograph function on the other variation is activated and reset by depressing the winding stem. Note that the Chronograph sub-dial counts elapsed minutes in an anticlockwise direction. This was probably done to minimize the number of gears that needed to be added; additional gears would have increased the thickness of the watch. Altmeppen reports that the production records he examined at the 1st Moscow Watch factory do not contain any mention of this caliber. It is my belief that the records are blank because the modification of the movement did not occur at this factory. Rather, I believe, the modification was made at the factory whose name appears in the dial signature. An artel is a cooperative of several persons who have equal rights. DEFECTS: small traces of use. All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped – because repairs may be expensive. Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. It is desirable to adjust the hands of your watch at the same time every day. An automatic or self-winding watch should be worn for at least 8 hours a day. It is a mechanical watch in which the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of natural motion of the wearer’s arm, to provide energy to run the watch, making manual winding unnecessary. If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only i. For minutes, NOT hours. Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don’t make sharp movements, and don’t touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. If the course of your watches is worsening and the accuracy of the reduction in the duration of the clock (autonomy) from one fully wound spring – it need a service. IF the watch is dirty – allow the watch to run down, don’t wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth. Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good. Mechanical watch is not recommended to use for engage in extreme sports, and expose them to excessive vibration loads. Recoil force, which take on the clock, affect their reliability and precision. No matter how perfect was not anti-shock mechanism, there is always the chance of excessive load that details of the mechanism can not survive. It is not recommended to adjust, the date between 20.00 and 06.00, because at this time involved a mechanism for automatic adjustment date. Translation pointers calendars manually in this position arrows may damage the mechanism. Date changes should be made, relegating pre-clockwise to lower sector of the dial for example, to position 6 (18.00) hours. In most cases, these watches contain the “start/stop” button and “reset” button. It is strongly recommended not to press the “reset” if the chronograph is running. Original artwork to the July 22, 1957 Time Magazine cover featuring Nikita Khrushchev. This was the second of seven instances Khrushchev was printed on the cover of Time Magazine between 1956 and 1962. It was by far the most flattering depiction of Khrushchev, looking more the part of trickster than mortal foe; a prankster uncle, and not the ruler of an evil empire threatening the world with nuclear annihilation. Perhaps this depiction was largely in part to the hope at the time that Khrushchev’s “deStalinization” of the Soviet Union would usher in an era of peace. But the Vietnam War and Cuban Missile Crisis, among other events, dashed such dreams in the ensuing years. Indeed, Time Magazine was less kind in later covers, going so far as placing an image of Khrushchev standing menacingly in front of a nuclear mushroom cloud on the cover of a 1961 issue. This cover art has great historical importance, as Time Magazine not only reported the news, it directed public opinion. Back in the 1950s, Time Magazine was far more relevant than it is today. A few months after this issue was released, Khrushchev yet again graced the cover of Time Magazine, but this time as Man of the Year. The cover art to that issue reposes in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Truly, this is a piece that belongs in a museum as well. Painting is 16 1/4″ x 12 7/8″ with an image area of 12″ x 8 5/8″: a touch larger than the magazine itself. It is matted to 19″ x 17″. Copy of magazine included.
