Vintage Ambroid Amber Chess Set 1980 Soviet Union USSR Rare
Rare Vintage Ambroid Amber Chess Set from Soviet Union USSR. Chess pieces made of amber (ambroid) were produced by the Kaliningrad Amber Factory in the 1970s and 1980s. The manufacturing process was very expensive: small pieces of amber were placed in molds and transformed into a malleable mass under high pressure of 1000 atmospheres and a temperature of 180-220°C. By using a special pressure regime with the addition of three colors of amber, pressed amber (ambroid) of different shades was obtained. Nowadays, the technology is not used due to its high energy consumption and cost. The products were of such high quality that Soviet ambroid is not considered a fake amber, and dark amber also fluoresces green under ultraviolet light. Its status is that of a lower-grade precious stone. Despite the controversy of such a formulation, it must be acknowledged that ambroid is 100% composed of fossil resin that has been petrified over millions of years. Figures are in pristine condition with no signs of wear, tears, or scuffs. Chessboard surface has a few minor cracks on the lacquer layer which are mainly cosmetic, wood layer itself remains in excellent condition. This set includes a king measuring 10 cm (3.93 in), a queen measuring 9 cm (3.54 in), and pawns measuring 5 cm (1.96 in). The chessboard is 41 cm 41 cm (16.14 in 16.14 in).
