The State Security Committee of the USSR, or KGB, was one of the most powerful agencies in the Soviet Union, responsible for national security, counterintelligence, foreign intelligence, combating dissent, protecting state borders, and information and ideological security. The KGB was officially founded in 1954, although its predecessors had existed since the first years after the revolution. The organization took over many of the functions previously performed by such structures as the Cheka, NKVD, and MGB.
