This is an extremely rare vintage mechanical wind-up toy from the former Soviet Union which features the Sputnik satellite orbiting the Earth. Wind up the toy with the key and the satellite orbits the Earth. The unique feature of the toy is the sound effects. As Sputnik orbits the Earth, there is a bell that rings Ding! “, then after a second or two pause, it repeats “Ding! ” mimicking the classic “Beep! That Sputnik broadcast back to Earth so observers around the globe could both see and hear the satellite. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957 and became the first country to orbit a satellite. This is the one singular event that started the Space Race. The toy has some surface rust as seen in the pictures and the back panel that once closed the back is missing. But mechanically it still runs great with Sputnik orbiting the Earth while the bell rings. Stands 4.5 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches deep. An iconic toy from the very beginning of the Space Race. This toy was produced by Children’s World Department Store (Detskiy Mir) located in downtown Moscow in the USSR in the late 1950’s to commemorate the first Sputnik satellites.
